August 31st 2006 06:58
Lucky Number Slevin is a crime thriller set in New York City. In Australia the film's release title is "The Wrong Man", this is the same title as the 1956 Hitchock film in which the lead character has a case of mistaken identity, a theme in which many Hitchcock films as well as Lucky Number Slevin share.
The film stars Bruce Willis and Josh Hartnett, who were also together in "Sin City".
The plot for the movie is a case of mistaken identity lands Slevin (Josh Hartnett) in the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city's rival crime bosses: The Rabbi (Ben Kingsley) and The Boss (Morgan Freeman). Slevin is under constant surveillance by relentless Detective Brikowski (Stanley Tucci) as well as the infamous assassin Goodkat (Bruce Willis), and finds himself having to hatch his own ingenious plot to get them...before they get him.

The movie's violence and style earned it comparisons with director Quentin Tarantino, and it is notable for having the most scenes (approximately 1/3 of the movie) of Hartnett shirtless, and in fact without clothes as he wears only a towel.

Thank You for Smoking

August 7th 2006 06:39
"Thank You for Smoking" is a film satire based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Buckley.
In the movie Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart) is the Vice President of and the chief spokesman for the Academy of Tobacco Studies, a tobacco lobby funded by cigarette companies to "research" the links between smoking cigarettes and health. Of course, no links are ever found. His job requires him to "inform" the public of these results, as well as defend the rights of smokers as a talking head on behalf of cigarettes, ranging in appearances from public to various television programs. Each week, Nick meets with Polly Bailey (Maria Bello) and Bobby Jay Bliss (David Koechner), the lobbyists for the alcohol and gun lobbies, collectively self-referred to as the M.O.D. Squad (or Merchants Of Death).
Interestingly, the act of smoking is not shown anywhere in the movie by anyone. Even when Nick reaches into his pocket to pull out a cigarette — his pack is empty

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto

August 2nd 2006 07:54
Mel Gibson is a big name in Hollywood for all the wrong reasons at the moment, but as they say, no publicity is bad publicity, and it will be interesting to see how his next film, "Apocalypto" fares at the box office.
The film is a mythic historical drama set in Central America 600 years ago during the decline of the Maya civilization and before the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
Apocalypto was filmed mainly in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Gibson uses the Yucatec Maya language in Apocalypto, in the same way he used Aramaic and Latin for "The Passion of the Christ". The cast are all unknown actors from Mexico City, the Yucatán, some Native Americans from the United States, and locals from Los Tuxtlas and Veracruz

Miami Vice was a popular television series (five seasons on NBC from 1984-1989) with James "Sonny" Crockett and Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs as two Miami police detectives working undercover.
The 2006 film of the same name stars Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell as Tubbs and Crockett. Director Michael Mann set out to craft entirely new characters and story, however there are still very subtle references to the television show in the movie. It was shot on location in the Caribbean and South Florida, and lost seven days of filming to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma.
The plot sees Tubbs and Crocket working undercover transporting drug loads into South Florida to identify a group responsible for three murders. Then the situation gets unexpectedly intense when Tubbs becomes romantically involved with a wife of an arms and drugs trafficker
