Dreamgirls Movie Preview

November 24th 2006 06:31
Dreamgirls is an upcoming musical film set in the 1960s and 1970s with a predominantly African-American cast. It is adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical Dreamgirls, which itself is loosely based upon the lives and careers of Motown act The Supremes. The film adaptation stars Jamie Foxx, Beyoncé Knowles, and Eddie Murphy, also featuring Danny Glover, Anika Noni Rose, Keith Robinson, and, in her film debut, Jennifer Hudson (of American Idol fame). Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé Knowles are possible Oscar nominees for their respective performances. It will be released wide into North America on Christmas Day. The Australian release date is January 18th.

Effie White, Deena Jones, and Lorrell Robinson - three friends from Chicago - are a promising singing trio called The Dreamettes. Accompanied by their songwriter C.C. White (Effie's brother), they travel to New York to compete in a talent show at the Apollo Theatre. Although the girls lose this first bid for fame, their talent attracts an ambitious manager by the name of Curtis Taylor, Jr., who uses unscrupulous tactics to move the girls from backup singers of superstar James "Thunder" Early to superstars of their own. Curtis reshapes the group to "crossover" from R & B to the lucrative pop music scene. Lead singer Effie gets replaced by the more attractive Deena and is eventually dropped from the trio. The group evolves into a more sophisticated group, The Dreams, with a lighter sound and chic look. They successfully attract a "whiter" audience and The Dreams rise to international stardom. The money, fame, and adulation, however, doesn't bring them happiness.

The Good German

November 23rd 2006 05:43
The Good German is a 2006 feature film adaptation of a novel by Joseph Kanon Directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Tobey Maguire, the film uses archival Russian footage and archived film from Corbis -- edited to blend with scenes shot on soundstages and on Universal Studios' backlot -- to tell a tale which on the surface is a murder mystery, but which weaves elements hinting at NASA's origins -- and the American postwar employment of Nazi rocket scientists. Shot in Technicolor, (which allowed the use of faster film than available black-and-white film stocks, and afforded the ability to use green screen techniques) the film was reduced in post-production -- through the use of a D.I. -- to grainier black and white, to blend with the (carefully restored) archival material. It will be released in America on December 8th. The Australian release date is March 8th next year.

Jacob ('Jake') Geismar, an American war correspondent -- played by George Clooney -- returns to Berlin during the Potsdam negotiations between the Allied powers near the close of World War II. Jacob witnesses his murdered driver, (a black-marketeering American soldier, played with a furious intensity by Tobey Maguire) , being fished from a river eddy, suspiciously adjacent to the Potsdam conference grounds. The corpse is discovered to be in possession of 100,000 German reichsmarks -- which are later revealed to have been printed by the U.S occupying forces.

Geismar becomes entwined both in the mystery of his murdered driver, and with the clandestine search by both German and American forces for the missing German Emil Brandt (the title character, played by Christian Oliver). Jake becomes more involved in both mysteries as his investigation intersects his search for Lena Brandt (played by Cate Blanchett), a German jew -- and Emil's wife -- with whom Jacob had been in a relationship prior to the war. Lena has survived the Holocaust by doing "what she had to" to stay alive -- early in the film this is assumed to be mere prostitution, but Lena holds a darker secret of complicity and guilt.

The Good Shepherd

November 22nd 2006 05:08
The Good Shepherd is a 2006 film directed by Robert De Niro (his second directorial effort after A Bronx Tale) and starring Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, and De Niro himself, in addition to an extensive supporting cast. The film tells the untold story of the birth of the Central Intelligence Agency. It will be released in the USA on December 22nd. The Australian release date is February 8th, 2007.

The value of secrecy -- commitment to honour and discretion -- has been embedded in Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) since childhood. As a dedicated, optimistic student at Yale University, he is recruited to join the Order of Skull and Bones, a secret society designed to breed the world leaders of tomorrow. Wilson's acute intelligence, immaculate reputation, and sincere belief in American values render him a prime candidate for a career in intelligence. During the Second World War, Bill Sullivan (Robert De Niro) recruits him to the new Office of Strategic Services, a precursor to the Central Intelligence Agency. As one of the Office's covert founders, duplicity is required of Wilson as he navigates a world where nothing can be accepted at face value.

Over his thirty-year career, Wilson's methods are adopted as standard operating procedure and he becomes a respected veteran in his field, but his idealism is eroded by a growing suspicious nature, reflective of a world settling into the long paranoia of the Cold War, and an escalating conflict with his volatile Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KGB) counterpart. In the end, he sacrifices everything in the name of serving the country he loves, including his devoted wife Clover (Angelina Jolie), his children, and himself.

Interesting Facts:

• Edward Wilson, the character played by Matt Damon, is based at least in part on James Jesus Angleton, the long-serving director of the CIA's counter-intelligence staff who also fell victim to intense paranoia during his career, and covert operations specialist Richard Bissell.
• Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon's co-star in The Departed, was once set to play Edward Wilson, but left the project. It would have been DiCaprio's third film with De Niro, following Marvin's Room and This Boy's Life. It's second time Damon's accepted a role DiCaprio once considered, after All the Pretty Horses.
• This is Joe Pesci's first film in eight years. His last was Lethal Weapon 4.
