Gran Torino

Gran Torino is new drama film touted as a possible Academy Award winner. It is directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. It will be released in the US on December 17th. The Australian release date is January 29th.

Eastwood plays a racist retired Korean War veteran who is unhappy with the increasing immigration of Hwong (Southern Chinese) people into his neighbourhood and their gang culture. One day he catches a Hwong boy trying to steal his vintage 1972 Gran Torino as part of a gang initiation. As punishment the gang force the boy work for Eastwood and make amends. Over time he gets to know the boy, his family, their customs and starts to loose his racist views. He even comes to protect the boy from rival gangs.

Underworld 3, rise of the Lycans


Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is the third instalment of the vampires vs werewolves series. This is a prequel set many centuries before the first film. It traces the origins of some characters but most importantly the beginning of the war between the two immortal races.

The film begins in the dark ages when the vampires known as death dealers under their ruthless leader Viktor have enslaved the Lycans. Lucian, a young Lycan emerges as a powerful leader who rallies his companions to rise up against the vampires.
There is also the secret love between Lucian and Viktor's daughter Sonja to complicate proceedings for all.

Underworld 3: Rise of the Lycans will be released in the USA on January 23rd 2009. The Australian release date is January 22nd.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno is a comedy film written and directed by Kevin Smith (Jay & Silent Bob). Housemates Zack Brown (Seth Rogen) and Miriam "Miri" Linky (Elizabeth Banks)have been friends since they were kids. However, they are both now in their 30s and struggling so much with mounting bills that their water and electricity is cut off. They attend a high school reunion, and upon meeting an old class mate who is now a gay porn star, Zack has the idea of he and Miri creating their own adult movie to make some money.
Miri is reluctant but Zack manages to bring her onboard.
I could tell you what happens next but that then would spoil the film!
It will be released in Australia on January 15th, 2009.

Friday the 13th

Released in 1980 Friday the 13th was the first film in perhaps the most famous horror film franchise of all time. With Jason Voorhees and his hockey mask becoming part of popular folklore the world over. Friday the 13th (2009) will be the first film in the series since Freddy vs. Jason. in 2003. The 2009 version of Friday the 13th will be a reboot or remake of the original, focusing on the origins of Jason. However, it will also take elements from Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3.
The remake will star Derek Mears as Jason Voorhees, with Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti in the leading roles.

Fittingly, the film will be released on Friday, February 13, 2009. Watch the trailer below:

Angels & Demons

The Prequel to the hugely popular Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Angels & Demons once again stars Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, the Harvard Professor of symbology. Ron Howard will also return to direct the film.
Angels & Demons will be released in the USA on May 15th, 2009. The Australian release date is May 14th.

Robert Langdon, is summoned to CERN (Swiss research facility) to analyse a mysterious symbol burned into the chest of Leonardo Vetra, a murdered physicist. During his investigation, Langdon discovers evidence of the re-emergence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, a powerful underground anti-religious organisation.

Together with Vetra’s daughter, he travels to Rome to stop four cardinals, all in line to be Pope, from being murdered, and to search for a stolen, destructive weapon that could kill millions and bring Rome down to rubble.

Doubt

Doubt is a Drama/Mystery film set in an American Catholic school in 1964. Sister Aloysius Beauvier (Meryl Streep) plays an elder sister who has strong morals but is not well liked by the children. Father Brendan Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is a priest with new ideas. He is kind to and popular with the students. He attempts to pass on some modern ideas to Sister Beauvier but this is not well received.
Events at the school take a dark turn when Father Flynn is suspected by Sister Beauvier of abusing some of the children. She is convinced of Father Flynn’s guilt but has no evidence whatsoever. Other staff at the school are divided, is Father Flynn truly guilty or is Sister Beauvier's dislike for him clouding her judgement?

After working together on The Pursuit of Happyness , Will Smith and director Gabriele Muccino have teamed up again on Seven Pounds.
Also starring Woody Harrelson and Rosario Dawson, the plot revolves around Ben (Will Smith) as an IRS agent who makes a terrible mistake in his life which took only seven seconds. To make amends, he decides to find seven strangers with troubled lives and change them for the better. One of the strangers is Emily (Rosario Dawson), a beautiful woman with a heart condition who Ben falls in love with, complicating his plans

Marley & Me is a comedy film starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson. It is based on the book of the same name by John Grogan which tells of his family's real life experiences with their Labrador Retriever.
Marley is a highly strung, boisterous, and somewhat uncontrolled dog. He is strong, powerful, endlessly hungry, eager to be active, and often (unintentionally) destructive of property. He routinely fails to "get the idea" of what humans expect of him. His acts and behaviours are forgiven, however, since it is clear that he has a heart of gold. The family often referred to him as the "world's worst dog", yet through him they discovered the key to happiness
