Mel Gibson's Apocalypto
August 2nd 2006 07:54
Mel Gibson is a big name in Hollywood for all the wrong reasons at the moment, but as they say, no publicity is bad publicity, and it will be interesting to see how his next film, "Apocalypto" fares at the box office.
The film is a mythic historical drama set in Central America 600 years ago during the decline of the Maya civilization and before the Spanish colonization of the Americas.
Apocalypto was filmed mainly in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Gibson uses the Yucatec Maya language in Apocalypto, in the same way he used Aramaic and Latin for "The Passion of the Christ". The cast are all unknown actors from Mexico City, the Yucatán, some Native Americans from the United States, and locals from Los Tuxtlas and Veracruz.
While Gibson is writing, producing, directing and financing the film himself, Disney has signed on to release it in certain markets. The film was originally due out in August this year, but the release date has been pushed back to December 8th 2006, due to heavy rains interfering with filming in Mexico. The film's budget is believed to be around $50 million.
If you look closely about 1:46 into the trailer, there is a single frame of Mel Gibson hanging out with the cast. In case you missed it, somebody has been kind enough to point it out in the clip below.

Bit of afan of the history fromthsi period, ripe for adventure and mythology that is for sure.
Im not a Braveheart fan, but as an atheiest I still found Passion Of The Christ to be an engrossing story of Sparticus style sacrifice. One man sticking to his beliefs, no matter what is others do or say.
