District 9

In many alien movies, the extra-terrestrials try to conquer earth either by killing us all or forcing us into slavery. District 9 has a different take on this common theme, where humans become the aggressors exploiting harmless aliens.
The film is set in Johannesburg, South Africa. A very large alien space craft is forced to land on earth. After landing here they are contained in a specific area and forced to live in slum like conditions and work while corporations try to exploit their technology for financial gain. Referred to as non-humans, they are not liked by the general population who see them as a strain on their resources. Meanwhile a non-human civil rights group fight to stop the oppression.
District 9 is produced by Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) and directed by Neill Blomkamp.
It will be released in the USA on August 14th, 2009. The Australian release date is August 13th. See the trailer below:
