An M.I.T. math whiz is recruited by a teacher to join a specialised team, the Blackjack Team, of card counters. They break away from their mentor before casino security finally catches up with them. Based on the best-selling book and true story by Ben Mezrich "Bringing Down the House: The Inside Story of Six M.I.T. Students Who Took Down Vegas for Millions".

The trailer for 21 is below:

In real life, the Blackjack Team was mostly composed of Asian-American males. However, studio executives have cast mostly white actors to portray these men in the film. Ben Mezrich, author of Bringing Down the House, has noted a "stereotypical" casting process on the part of Hollywood.
The scenes in the MIT bar were actually filmed at the Boston University Pub. MIT would not allow them to film on campus.

Much of this movie was actually shot across the river from MIT at Boston University.
Filming was done at the Christian Science Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Charlie Wilson's War

January 7th 2008 04:45
Charlie Wilson's War is a 2007 film about Democratic Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson, who conspired with a rogue CIA operative named Gust Avrakotos to launch an operation to help the Afghan Mujahideen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. The film is adapted from George Crile's 2003 book Charlie Wilson's War: The Extraordinary Story of the Largest Covert Operation in History. Directed by Mike Nichols, written by Aaron Sorkin, and starring Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Phillip Seymour Hoffman, the film was nominated in 2007 for five Golden Globe Awards, including "Best Motion Picture." The film was released on December 21st in the USA. The Australian release date is January 24th, 2008.
Charlie Wilson's War Tom Hanks Julia Roberts Philip Seymour Hoffman

Urged on by his staunchly anti-communist friend and romantic interest, Joanne Herring, Wilson leads the effort to provide United States funds indirectly to the Afghan Mujahideen. In the process, the film also reveals Wilson as a Congressman whose disdain for the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan is supplemented by his gregarious social life of women and partying.
Herring persuades him to visit the Pakistani leadership who complain about the inadequate support to oppose the Soviets and insist he visit a major Afghan refugee camp. Deeply moved by their misery and determination to fight, Wilson is frustrated by the regional CIA detachment's insistence on a low key approach against the Soviet despite his firm pledges for generous funding as a member of two major Congressional defense committees. To solve that problem, Wilson befriends the maverick CIA operative Gust Avrakotos and his understaffed Afghanistan group to find a better strategy, especially including a means to counter the Soviets' formidable gunship helicopter air support. As a result, Wilson's deft political bargaining for the necessary funding and Avrakotos' group's careful planning using those resources, such as supplying the guerrillas with FIM-92 Stinger missile launchers, turn the Soviet occupation into a deadly quagmire with their heavy fighting vehicles being destroyed at a crippling rate. This effort by Wilson ultimately evolves into a major portion of the US foreign policy known as the Reagan Doctrine, under which the U.S. assisted the mujahideen and other anti-communist resistance movements around the world. Controversial at the time, some now credit the policy with contributing to the ultimate collapse of the Soviet Union and global communism, bringing about the end of the Cold War.
Despite the victory, Avrakotos warns that unless there is a serious effort to help Afghanistan rebuild back into a stable society, there could be dire and unpredictable repercussions for both that nation and the USA. Unfortunately, Wilson finds exceptionally little enthusiasm in the government for even the modest measures he proposes to heed this warning and his efforts are frustrated. The film ends with Wilson receiving a major commendation for the support of the US clandestine services, but his pride is sadly tempered by his fears of what unintended consequences his secret efforts could yield in the future.

Persepolis

December 28th 2007 10:26
Persepolis is a 2007 animated film based on the graphic novel of the same name. The film was written and directed by Marjane Satrapi (author of the novel) and Vincent Paronnaud. It tells the story of a young girl in Iran during the Iranian Revolution. Through the eyes of the nine-year-old Marjane it shows how people's hopes were dashed as the fundamentalists took power, forced the veil on women and imprisoned thousands. The title is a reference to the historical town of Persepolis.

The film won the Prize of the Jury at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival and was released in France and Belgium on June 27. In her speech on receiving the Cannes award, Satrapi said "Although this film is universal, I wish to dedicate the prize to all Iranians."
The U.S. version is scheduled in theatres on December 25, 2007. The film will be released in Australia on February 7th, 2008.
Persepolis Movie Poster

Marjane is a child growing under the Shah's dictatorship. Her parents are urban educated people but hope for a change. Marjane dreams of being the last of the prophets.
With the revolts against the Shah, her uncle, a Communist aristocrat from Azerbaijan, is freed from prison and tells how he fought for the triumph of the proletariat even escaping to the Soviet Union. However, he is captured again and executed under the Islamic Revolution. He dedicates his single prison visit to Marjane, making a deep impression on her.
Marjane grows during the Revolution, wears a veil, Nike sneakers, and a "Punk Is Not Ded [sic]" jacket. She listens to "rebel" music like The Bee Gees. Her grandmother, a tender independent woman, is another of her influences. Later she evolves to Iron Maiden.
The Iran-Iraq war starts and her parents are concerned about her safety. Since she had studied at the French Lycee of Tehran, she is sent to the French Lycee of Vienna. The Iranian teenager does not fit in well in Austria, but ends up making friends with nihilist high-class kids. She spends Christmas holidays alone while her friends travel to meet their boring families in Brazil or other places. An unsuccessful relationship destroys her character. She sleeps on the streets of Vienna. After being hospitalized with blood-coughing bronchitis, she asks her parents to return to Iran no-questions-asked.
In Iran, she keeps depressed when seeing the situation of her family and former friends. At the end, she gets herself together (to the tune of "The Eye of the Tiger") and studies Fine Arts in the University of Tehran. Things like studying anatomy with veiled women or the party-interruption of Guards of the Revolution cause her to protest.
She finally migrates to Paris leaving her family behind.
