Letters from Iwo Jima / Flags of Our Fathers

October 23rd 2006 06:49
As covered in a previous post, Flags of our Fathers is a 2006 film directed by Clint Eastwood which recounts the ultimately tragic tale of five young United States Marines, and one United States Navy corpsman photographed raising an American flag atop Mount Suribachi on February 23, 1945, in the midst of the great Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. It was released on October 20th in the US and will be released on November 2nd in Australia.

As he was making Flags of our Fathers, Clint Eastwood became intrigued with the plight of the 20,000 Japanese soldiers who had been given the hopeless task of defending the island - a task which amounted to a suicide mission. This fascination led Eastwood to develop "Letters from Iwo Jima".

Formerly titled "Red Sun, Black Sand", this film will be in Japanese and tell the story of the invasion of Iwo Jima from the Japanese viewpoint. Almost like a memoir of one of the Japanese soldiers, it primarily follows the story of two good friends serving in the Japanese forces. The men watch helplessly throughout various battles as their comrades are killed, many of them becoming almost suicidal. It will be released on December 9th in Japan and February 9th, 2007 in America.

Japan has released a Japanese trailer that advertises both films. You can see it below, unfortunately it doesn't have English subtitles.
