October 20th 2006 08:39
The Nativity Story, once titled simply, Nativity, is a 2006 film starring Keisha Castle-Hughes (New Zealand's Oscar-nominated actress of The Whale Rider) and Shohreh Aghdashloo (Oscar-nominated supporting actress of House of Sand and Fog). Filming began May 1, 2006 in Matera, Italy and Morocco. The film is to be released world wide prior to Christmas. Specifically the UK and American release date is December 1st, and the Australian release date is December 7th.
The film follows the life of the Virgin Mary and Joseph over the two-year period immediately prior to the birth of Jesus, and several years afterward (including the visit of the Magi and the vengeful rage of King Herod).
New Line is taking great pains to create a film in the tradition of The Passion of the Christ which Christian families will be able to enjoy. Mike Rich, screenwriter of The Rookie, is writing the script, drawing heavily from the four gospels. A number of Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish theologians have also been consulted. Unlike The Passion of the Christ, this film will have less violence and be in English.
