The Battle of Red Cliffs, otherwise known as the Battle of Chibi, was a decisive battle in Chinese history. It took place during the winter of 208 AD at the end of Han Dynasty, immediately prior to the period of the Three Kingdoms in China. It was fought between the allied forces of the southern warlords Liu Bei and Sun Quan, who were outnumbered by the forces of the northern warlord Cao Cao who was trying to take the land south of the Yangtze river. Liu Bei and Sun Quan's alliance proved victorious and this victory at Red Cliffs gave them control of the Yangtze and provided a line of defence that was the basis for the later creation of the two southern kingdoms of Shu Han and Eastern Wu.
Red Cliff tells the story of this battle, and the events leading up to it from the point of view of the three war lords. It is directed by John Woo who has attempted to give a historically accurate depiction of the characters.
The movie will be an epic and is the most expensive Asian film to date. In Asia it will be released in two parts totalling over 4 hours, however the rest of the world will receive one 2.5 hour abridged version. The Australian released date for this version is January 29th, 2009.
