The Cup

July 16th 2010 01:31
The Cup is a non-fiction book written by American author Eric O’Keefe. First published in Australia in 2009, its subject is the 2002 running of the Melbourne Cup, which was won by the American-bred gelding Media Puzzle, who was ridden by champion Australian jockey Damien Oliver and prepared by the Irish trainer Dermot Weld.

The Cup Damien Oliver

In 1975, while competing in the Boulder Cup at Kalgoorlie, Ray Oliver, Damien and Jason’s father, was involved in a five-horse fall. Knocked unconscious, the jockey was flown from Kalgoorlie to Perth where he was treated at Royal Perth Hospital. Ray Oliver never regained consciousness and died. His death left his widow, Pat, to look after their two sons: Jason, 5, and Damien, 3.

The week before the 2002 Melbourne Cup, Jason Oliver, Damien’s older brother, was fatally injured in a training accident while riding an unraced horse at Ascot Racecourse in Perth. Taken to Royal Perth Hospital, Jason never regained consciousness and died after being taken off life support.

Damien’s decision to return to Melbourne following Jason’s death and compete in the Melbourne Cup captured the attention of his fellow countrymen as well as racing enthusiasts around the world. He dedicated his victory in the 2002 Melbourne Cup to his brother. His winning ride has since been selected by Sport Australia Hall of Fame as one of the most memorable moments in the country’s sporting history.

Simon Wincer (Director of Phar Lap and The Man From Snowy River) and Eric O’Keefe co-wrote the screenplay for the movie version of The Cup, which is in pre-production. Stephen Curry is cast as Damien Oliver and Ray Winstone as Dermot Weld. Ian Deutscher will also star in the film. Lance Hool of Silver Lion Films and Kirk D’Amico of Myriad Pictures are executive producers.

Eric O'Keefe on writing The Cup.

AT FLEMINGTON Racecourse on Friday May 28th, 2010 movie director Simon Wincer announced the cast for The Cup, the triumphant story of Damien Oliver's win on Media Puzzle in 2002 after the death of his brother Jason. Actor Stephen Curry jumps on to the saddle as Oliver, and as for who's portraying Irish horse trainer Dermot Weld, it's not so much who's in but who's out. English actor Ray Winstone was cast in the role, his name starring on two different movie posters, but now the artwork needs to be re-done because Irishman Brendan Gleeson has taken over the role. Western Australian farm boy Ian Deutscher will draw the local crowds with his Aussie mutton chop, heart and body as big as Phar Lap (rather appropriate to have such a guy act in this film) and of course his sleek copper uniform will stun the audience as he escorts Curry down the racecourse in his 2000 Commodore. A spokeswoman explains Deutscher is considered essential to the success of this film.

Warren Miller's Dynasty

May 27th 2010 07:33
Warren Miller's 60th annual film, DYNASTY reveals the past, present, and future of winter sport. It is a film that gathers the generations under one filmic roof, from the Crist Family Patriarch to Glen Plake to Daron Rahlves, and the youth explosion of terrain park talent they've inspired. It's like a family reunion, held in neck deep pow, with mandatory air required for entry.
Warren Miller

Once again hosted by Jonny Moseley, this year's film finds epic snowfall, insane big mountain lines, and huge air in places like Washington's Crystal Mountain, Lake Tahoe's Sierra Nevada mountains, and all across Colorado. It's a one-of-a-kind look at a world you know like your own family. And it leaves no snowball unturned in celebrating everyone who has, does, and will forever be a part of Warren Miller's Dynasty.

Warren Miller film premiers are an experience, a celebration, and a phenomenon not to be missed! Ice Edge Marketing brings this epic film to Melbourne for five nights only at the Rivoli Cinemas from June 2-6, 2010.

Leatherheads

April 28th 2008 11:12
Leatherheads is a 2008 American film directed by and starring George Clooney. The film also stars Renée Zellweger and John Krasinski. It will be released in Australia on May 29th.
Leatherheads

Clooney plays Dodge Connolly, captain of the struggling football team, the Duluth Bulldogs. Dodge is determined to save both his team and football in general when the players lose their sponsor and the league is on the brink of collapse. He convinces a college football star, Carter "the Bullet" Rutherford, to join the Bulldogs, hoping to capitalize on Carter's fame as a war hero.
In addition to his legendary tales of war heroism, Carter has dashing good looks and unparalleled speed and skill on the field. As a result of his presence, both the Bulldogs and football in general prosper.
Zellweger provides romantic interest as reporter Lexie Littleton, who becomes the object of the affections of both Carter and Dodge. Unknown to Carter, Lexie has been assigned to find proof that Carter's war stories are bogus.
Meanwhile, Dodge's attempts to legitimize football start to backfire, as rules are formalized, taking away much of the improvisational antics that made the game fun for many of its players.

The character Jimmy "Dodge" Connolly is based on the life of Johnny "Blood" McNally who played for multiple NFL teams from 1925 to 1938. From 1926-1927 he played for the Duluth Eskimos and later won four World Championships with the Green Bay Packers. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The film, in fact, is loosely based on the Duluth Eskimos of the 1920s and how they essentially saved the NFL.

Invincible

August 11th 2006 06:44
To spice things up for his organization, Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Vermeil (Greg Kinnear) decided to invite fans to compete for a spot on the pro football team's roster. Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg), a 30-year-old bartender who had recently lost his wife and his teaching job, gave it a shot and against the odds, wound up on the team.
The preseason/tryout scenes were filmed at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania, and the Central High Lancers field during the July/August months of 2005. The crew used their locker room and field. The Lancers who themselves had preseason training had to use Fairmount park in West Philadelphia. Rocky Balboa Trailer

July 19th 2006 05:59
Rocky Balboa (formerly known as Rocky VI), is written by, directed, and starring, Sylvester Stallone. This will be the last film in the series, which all began back in 1976 with the first Rocky, which won Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, and Stallone was nominated for Best Actor.
The script for Rocky Balboa has the over-the-hill Balboa taking on the reigning heavyweight boxing champ Mason "The Line" Dixon. Both men are trying to restore their dignity: Dixon because he's reviled by fight fans for taking on unproven opponents; Rocky because its been years since the aging boxer from South Philly has climbed into a ring. The fight is billed as "Will vs Skill". The release date in the US is December 22nd.
