"The Departed" is an American film remake of the popular Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs. The movie involves an impressive list of male actors, directors and producers from Hollywood including Martin Scorsese, Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen.
The basic premise for the film is as follows:
The state police force in South Boston are waging war on Irish-American organized crime. Young undercover cop Billy Costigan (DiCaprio) is assigned to infiltrate the mob syndicate run by gangland chief Frank Costello (Nicholson). While Billy quickly gains Costello's confidence, Colin Sullivan (Damon), a hardened young criminal who has infiltrated the police department as an informant for the syndicate, is rising to a position of power in the Special Investigation Unit. Each man becomes deeply consumed by his double life, gathering information about the plans and counter-plans of the operations he has penetrated. But when it becomes clear to both the mob and the police that there's a mole in their midst, Billy and Colin are suddenly in danger of being caught and exposed to the enemy—and each must race to uncover the identity of the other man in time to save himself. But is either willing to turn on the friends and comrades they've made during their long stints undercover?
Although set in Boston, the movie was shot in New York as well as Boston.
It will be the first time Jack Nicholson has played a villain since he played The Joker in Batman (1989).
The Departed has interesting links with another film due out this year, "The Good Shepherd". Robert De Niro was offered Jack Nicholson's part in The Departed, but declined as he is directing The Good Shepherd. Leonardo DiCaprio was cast in the title role in The Good Shepherd, but he dropped out to play Billy Costigan in The Departed. Coincidently, his costar Matt Damon took his intended role in The Good Shepherd.

Looks like Scorsese may be returning to form. ((Bringing Out The Dead was his last great picture IMO)
Jack Nicholson looks right at home as the mob boss.
You know there is potential for granduer when you picture Pink floyds Comfortably Numb blaring to an epic action scene, martin style.
Even Matt Damon and Leo look comfortable in there rolls, these 2 are so hit and miss with there performances, I hope they dont ruin this one for me.
Heres Hoping.
