Michael Jackson: This Is It is a 2009 film showing Michael Jackson's rehearsals for a concert series of the same name. The footage was filmed at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It is set for worldwide theatrical release on October 28, 2009 with a limited two-week run.
On August 10, 2009, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved a deal between Michael Jackson's estate, concert promoter AEG Live and Sony Pictures. This allows Sony Pictures to edit hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage, mostly shot at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Sony paid $60 million for the film rights.
The film will feature a retrospective of Jackson's career, behind-the-scenes segments, interviews with former friends of the popstar and 3-D sequences. The film project is underway with the full support of The Estate of Michael Jackson and its executors. A live album will accompany the film, and will feature at least one new song.
